Tough enough to hike the Great Wall? Not the trimmed section of tourist attractions such as Badaling or Mutianyu, but the whole length from Jiayuguan to the Shanhaiguan, with an eight-year-old schoolboy and his dad.
Urumqi man Liu Yong and his eight- year-old boy Lele had embarked on a Great Wall Walk since 2005 summer when schools break off for the summer vacation.
In 2005, they covered the distance between the west terminal of the Wall, Jiayuguan, to Yinchuan. In summer of 2006, they trekked from Yinchuan to Yulin, Shaanxi.
The plan is to walk the whole length of the Wall from Jiayuguan and end at Shanhaiguan, within four or five years if needed, scheduled on summer vacations of schools. They get started every summer when schools break for vacations and get back to Urumqi before August 20th when school begins.
Now again is the summer hiking time, Liu Yong is seeking like-minded people to join the great quest, which will start from Beitai, Yulin, Shaanxi, crossing Yulin, Shenmu and enter into Shanxi province. This section of the Great Wall is basically Ming Wall ruins.
The average daily distance will be 20-30 kilometers and you are supposed to carry a load of requirement and supply weighed about 20 kilos.
Be prepared, it is gonna be tough.
